Peach State Summer Theatre May-July 2018

Valdosta, GA
Assistant Technical Director

Before working onsite, I created CNC files for the upcoming season. For the first two weeks, I spent my days drafting up CNC files from designer & TD drawings and running them at a rented CNC machine from FSU Opera. Once completed, I sent new models back to the TD to complete the drafting of the units. While in the shop, I acted as a shop foreman and a special projects lead, including rigging, shopping, tool maintenance, finish carpentry, etc. During the run of shows, I became the fly captain and was responsible for leading the changeover crews from repping the shows, any maintenance or repair to the sets, and planning and scheduling the strikes for all three shows.

The show was built in forced prepective with broadway flats. Behind the set, front projection images were mapped around the flats that the crew had to whenever the set was repped back onto stage. For the finale, we flew in a flat with clip lights pointed directed at the audience, to use as audience blinders. Besides the compound miter angles to create the molding and the flats, it was a nice set to create to a shop unity before the big musicals.

All of the truss pieces for the show were created using the CNC. The three platform towers were constructed with 2x8 material and had six zero throw swivel casters and four airlock brakes. The roof on the center tower had to be removable for storage concerns. We used semi-sphere dowels as bolt heads. We used flying flats as movable projection screens. This show challenged us on making sure all of the elements worked and actor safe with all of the tower moves and the fight choreography. The bolt covers were the main repair of this set.

The massive build for this show was a struggle for the shops. Hamonia Gardens took most of our time as we wanted the place to feel like a million dollars. The curtains on the back wall was rigged to fly flat and then pulled to create depth. The table curtains were also rigged to easily open and close to match the high energy of the music. The Hay & Feed store was a four wagons with the stairs  to the second story. The Hat shop was broadway flats with wagon brakes wheels to help the crew move them offstage. We used part of the Hay & Feed store as platforms for the Hamonia Garderns and used the Hamonia Gardens stairs as escape stairs for the store.
